Second Project: POWERS OF THE FALSE

VIDEO

CRITIQUE DECEMBER 3 IN CLASS

3 minutes.

Reality is malleable.

As we have seen, images and sounds can be organized, placed in relation with one another, so that an effect is provoked, an interpretation is promoted, a reality is conjured.

By making connections between your materials and placing them in a container (your video) where they can resonate together, you are performing a kind of magic, bringing a new set of possibilities into being that continue to resonate in your life thereafter. Video as a lived experience with consequences for the future.

Through a combination of video you have shot and found video (online), you will construct a narrative that places the viewer within an alternate reality where things function differently than in (so-called) real life.

(No more than 25% of the footage should be original.)

You should not try and convince us of the reality of what you’re conjuring (no voice-over to steer us).

Instead, use the powers of editing, recontextualizing, scrambling sound and image (for instance) to take us there.

We should already be located inside the world you’ve made from the start of the video.
